Have A Blast In Uncle Toms Cabin

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Tucked in and among the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina are the towns of Bryson City and Murphy. Aside from the fact that both of these cities are based near rivers and streams with plenty of places for whitewater rafting, you will find dozens of attractions, museums, places of historic interest, hiking trails and more all in a day’s drive. When you decide on one of the many mountain cabins for rent in the area or you choose to stay in one of the areas fine inns, you will find both of these communities a wonderful place to make a temporary residence during your Great Smoky Mountain vacation.

The region has been home to various groups of humans since the last Ice Age. A people known as the Ani-Kitu-Hwagi, whose presence predates that of the Cherokee by at least 500 years, established the nearby village of Kituwa around the year 1000 AD. Eventually, these people were overrun and eventually assimilated by the Cherokee and Catawba Indians. The town was burned by the English around 1760, but until their land was taken over by the U.S. government some sixty years later, the Cherokee continued to use the site for ceremonies. In 1996, the Cherokee Nation’s Eastern Band reclaimed the land and consider the site sacred.

Those who are interested in the history and traditions of the Cherokee should make it a point to see the Cherokee Heritage Museum and Gallery in the neighboring town of the same name. Admission is only $2.50 and less for children age 10 and under. Living American Indian history can be experienced at the Oconaluftee Indian Village where re-enactors who are also members of the Cherokee Nation recreate the everyday life of their people as it was 250 years ago.

More history of a different kind can be seen in the areas main city of Asheville. The 250 room Vanderbilt Mansion is preserved as it was in 1900 and contains a rich collection of sculptures and paintings as well as a number of restaurants and a winery.

Of course, as writer Lorenz Hart wrote back in the 1920s, being “in our mountain greenery where God makes the scenery” may be more to your liking. “Two crazy people in love” can discover a lot of romantic getaways in the vicinity and explore it all from rustic cabin rentals available near majestic state parks like Chimney Rock. This amazingly glorious area is where the modern film Last of The Mohicans with Daniel Day-Lewis was filmed, and features waterfalls, miles of hiking trails and vistas of up to 75 miles as well as excursions and group activities.

The devout may want to see such local points of interest as the Fields of the Wood which is a biblically themed park owned and operated by the Church of God of Prophecy. This is simply a small example of sites this section of North Carolina has to offer to the vacationer, so plan your trip today.

San Diego Vacations – Tips for a Cheap Vacation

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

I thought that I would share some of my personal tips and hints on how to travel to San Diego for a fantastic vacation but for only a fraction of the cost of a traditional vacation. In my opinion the internet is quickly becoming a vast wasteland of spam, old articles, and useless information. It simply is increasingly difficult to find quality information on topics that you are interested in. So to that point, here are 4 of my personal tips to save money on your next vacation to San Diego.

Lindbergh Field, San Diego’s main airport, is where you will first stop. But before buying your ticket on traditional websites, try and auction website where you bid on your ticket amount. Depending on your dates and range of flexibility, the potential savings could be huge. Perhaps the best thing about flying into San Diego is the fact that the main airport is only about 5 miles from the center of downtown. So this is perfect if you are staying in the Gaslamp Quarter or attending a conference at the San Diego Convention Center. No more long drives into town after a late flight. You are in town!

San Diego has a wide variety of accommodation choices for all types of travelers. And while hotels offer discounts from time to time, the best value for your dollar are San Diego vacation rentals. If you’re coming into town for a convention with colleagues why not split the cost between you and rent out a 3 bedroom condo in the Gaslamp Quarter? And because most of the buildings in downtown San Diego have been built within the last 10 years, the quality of stay is equal if not better than staying in a hotel. Save even more money by eating in with a fully-equipped kitchen and dining area. It’s no wonder why an increasing number of vacationers are using vacation rentals in San Diego to save big money on their vacation.

Half-priced sushi anyone? San Diego has some of the best sushi restaurants in the state of California, and while many can still be quite pricey, almost all offer half-priced sushi during happy hour. Remember to sit at the sushi bar as this is where most of the great deals apply. Plus it’s always nice to watch professionals fix your meal! How about Mexican food? Simply stop a local on the street and ask where the nearest burrito shack is and they will point you to some of the most authentic Mexican food outside of Mexico itself. And the best part is that it comes at a fraction of the cost that you would pay if eating at a traditional restaurant. Probably the best thing about San Diego is that if you are on a budget you can always find tasty food at every corner.

San Diego has a ton of activities and attractions for the whole family. Seaworld, the San Diego Zoo, Legoland – all of these major attractions offer discounted tickets through various vendors. For instance, Costco and AAA members receive discounts on most major San Diego attractions, as do Southwest Airlines customers. Try going to a San Diego Padres game on game day and buy a discounted family ticket at the gate. There are always special deals on dedicated to families showing up on game day. Want to check out a San Diego Chargers game? The same discounts usually apply as well.

Finally – four tips on how to save money on your next vacation to San Diego. Cheap flights, San Diego vacation rentals, corporate sponsorships on attraction tickets, and local eateries. No gimmicks and no skimping, you can still have the full California experience while saving 30, 40, even 50% off of a normal vacation cost. Vacation like a local and enjoy the rewards!

Carlsbad – Beaches, Legoland and Flowers

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Carlsbad is a lovely, upscale beach-side community just north of San Diego in what locals refer to as North County, a community of quaint beach towns lined along the coastline of the Pacific Ocean.

The North San Diego beach communities include Solana Beach, Encinitas, Cardiff, Leucadia and Carlsbad. Each community is blessed with magnificent ocean views and cooling sea breezes.

Legoland is a fun attraction for families when they are visiting Carlsbad – it’s a well thought out, colorful and a very agreeable theme parks for parents as well as children. The lines much shorter than those at Disneyland plus the atmosphere is quiet relaxed for a children’s theme park. Adults enjoy the lovely landscaping and appreciate the healthy caf with healthier menu items.

Carlsbad has some of the finest beaches in the world. The main beach – Carlsbad State Beach – stretches more than a mile from Tamarack Avenue to downtown Carlsbad. The beach is wide and sandy along the ocean with a sidewalk along the bluff above, perfect for sunset strolls and people watching. South Carlsbad State Beach is two miles south (the locals call it South Ponto). A state campground here is very popular with wonderful views from the bluffs overlooking the ocean.

A popular attraction is the Flower Fields, open in the spring from March through May where you can walk through acres of vibrantly colored fields of flowers along the Pacific Ocean.

Carlsbad hotels and Carlsbad inns consist of all the big chains including Carlsbad Motel 6, Carlsbad Days Inn, Carlsbad Holiday Inn, Carlsbad Courtyard by Marriott. More information about Carlsbad lodging.

Many vacation time-share condos serve as Carlsbad resorts. Very pricey spa resorts are also in Carlsbad. The more upscale Carlsbad hotels and lodging accommodations are wonderful, albeit expensive.

One of the most exclusive Carlsbad hotels is La Costa Resort and Spa, located on the southern edge of Carlsbad. From the moment you enter through the gates of La Costa Resort and Spa you are embraced by the picturesque beauty and leisurely charm of the Southern California lifestyle.

Ranked among the best spa resorts in the country by Cond Nast, La Costa brings together a world class spa, a championship golf course, casual elegance and unequalled personalized service to create an outstanding romantic weekend getaway at a Carlsbad hotel resort.

Of all the Carlsbad Beach Inns the only one that is (1) quaint and (2) romantic with (3) views of the ocean for (4) under $160 a night is the Inn at Moonlight Beach. Closer to the ocean than other Carlsbad area bed and breakfasts, the Inn At Moonlight Beach features lovely ocean views with suites starting at $129.

Carlos von Hunnefeld loves to explore new places, resorts, hotels and inns. He travels for a San Diego California design firm and can often be found on the road up to sixty days each year. When asked about SoCal accommodations, Carlos will tell about a great Carlsbad Beach Bed and Breakfast or an incredible San Diego Beach Hotels.

5 Great Things you can do in the Mountains

Monday, April 19th, 2010

Many friends and families book cabins for vacation trips and for a private get-away from the fast paced real world of everyday activity. There is no better place than to get lost in the mountains for a week or two for a retreat. Get your checklist ready and be ready for your trip! Here are some tips that will help you plan an adventurous journey!

1. Fishing – Should you be in the mountains, fishing in a chilly mountain stream for trout is a must. Fly fishing has been a well-liked fishing approach since man started fishing with hooks. Fishing for trout seems be getting hot by May and continue throughout the summer. Salmon fishing is good between September and December in most areas. Be sure to study up on the area you are going and find out what is biting when you are going to be there. There are also some big bass in mountain lakes as well as crappie and other species.

2.Hiking – Finding a good hiking trail is easy in most parks and can lead to finding magical places. Walking is fun to do with pals but not suggested to do on your own. Always be prepared before for the trail and drink plenty of drinking water before you leave and bring plenty along with you! Be also sure to bring enough food for a few good meals, not to mention bringing a good sharp knife, a lighter or matches, backpack, flashlight, map of trail, compass, light raincoat or plastic bags. If it rains you can use either one to keep your gear dry. You never know when bad weather can strike or you make a wrong turn. I always carry my cell phone with me also just in case!

others.

4. Hunting – Depending on what time of the year you vacation determines what you can hunt. You can find hunting clubs or guides for day hunts or for full retreats! Many areas have prime deer hunting, Turkey, elk, moose, quail, chukar, duck and many others. Also many ranches and guides offer hunting and vacation packages. Enjoy fine dining and fine hospitality on a vacation hunt! Have the hospitality of a bed and breakfast with the adventure of a wild game hunt.

5.Snow Skiing – Snow skiing in the United States is a fun winter activity and can be enjoyed by anyone. There are many great locations to snow ski throughout the US. Some resorts have advanced snowmaking systems that allow more snow and in some cases extends the season.

Whether you’re hiking, fishing, biking, hunting, camping, skiing be sure to take many pictures. Just remember don’t become too comfortable around wild animals, many are territorial and don’t take kind to anyone invading their space.

Find a great Vacation Rental or a secluded Mountain Bed and Breakfast today!
