Major Concerns Regarding Kid’s Safety When They Wheel Around With Their Shoes

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Those shoes with the wheels in the heels are dangerous. That’s the problem. The kids wear those things in stores and on the streets and they have no regard for the older folks who might want to shop without jumping out of the way every five seconds.

The wheeled sneakers are far from safe, in spite of what you may think. The practice of “heeling,” as it is known to those who do it, is slow enough that most kids don’t wear safety gear, but it’s fast enough that a kids can break a wrist bone, or worse, from one fall.

These kids are almost begging for a brain injury. Just imagine, skidding around on wheels in your heels and no helmet to protect your cranium.

Naturally, speed isn’t the only problem here. Another issue is the ability of those wheelers to move around as they need to. Do you think a wheeler at the mall is going to be able to dodge those fountains? No way.

The most common injuries are broken bones and sprained joints. These shoes may seem simple, but they can cause some serious damage. A simple fall can easily hurt someone whose automatic reaction is to stick out his or her arms. Broken bones follow.

The next time you see a kid with these wheeled shoes on, just keep an eye out. Watch as they dart in and around the crowds. It’s obvious to you, but maybe not to the child, or the child’s parents. There more than personal safety at stake.

It isn’t their fault that the kids don’t know how to be careful when wearing their wheel-heels.

Crowds just can’t move fast enough to get out of the way of these wheeled youngsters, and the kids may not have enough control to keep themselves safe, let alone the people around them in the mall on park.

The shoes may be innocuous, but they are death on wheels waiting to happen. Like with anything, you should weigh the odds before you make a decision.

Stunt Kites Make For Great Outdoor Fun

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

“Tavern Puzzles” is an informal name for a disentanglement puzzle. This is really a type of mechanical puzzle that involves disentangling a piece from another piece or a set of pieces from one another. (A mechanical puzzle is one that’s presented like a set of physically interlinked pieces.) They’re known as “tavern puzzles” since legend has it that blacksmiths used to forge them to amuse their friends at local inns.

As a disentanglement puzzle, tavern puzzles do not rely on force for their solution – nor, for that matter, any trickery in their design. They have traditionally been regarded as educational as well as casual pastimes because the problem-solving skills needed for the most tough examples are believed to exercise and enhance the mind. In reality, restoring the puzzle back to its original state may be as tough or even harder than disentangling it in the first place!

These often mind-boggling puzzles are not outdoor toys as such in the manner of something like stunt kites, but they used to be very common companions nonetheless on occasions ranging from long journeys to nearby picnics. Today’s tavern puzzles are curiosities which are nowhere near as popular as they once were, but make fantastic gifts for their novelty and winsome simplicity. Or perhaps more accurately seeming simplicity, for one of the reasons why they may be very addictive is the really fact that they look rather straightforward at first glance!

These brain teasers are generally constructed of metal, though some designs will make use of rope. While a niche interest nowadays, a lively little cottage industry has grown around their creation and promotion, with such accessories as stands and hanging carousels for displaying them. Indeed, all tavern puzzles bear interesting geometric designs that make them as much art as games, and many museums, particularly those dedicated to folk crafts, prominently display some of the finest examples.
