The city is an international shopping destination that is home to over 1.6 million people in the centre alone. Every year the dance is performed from the city centre to the Batu Caves which are an hour or so out of the city. The ceremony involves Hindu devotees carrying on their backs a Kavadi, which also involves spikes and hooks digging in to the skin so that devotees carry a physical burden all the way to the caves.
