Who’s Up for a San Diego Getaway?

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Tourism is San Diego’s 3rd most important industry, and it’s obvious why. San Diego enjoys comfortable weather at all times of year, but especially May through August when vacations are most popular. This makes the activities you can do in any city even more fun. The proximity of the beautiful Pacific Ocean tops it off, making a perfect getaway destination. Most big cities enjoy attractions like theme parks and museums. San Diego’s, however, are one of a kind. Here are some of the top attractions you’ll discover in San Diego.

There are marine parks in many cities, but none can compare to Sea World. Sea World is famous for its shows and exhibits featuring sea dwelling animals, up to and including killer whales. Their staff is generally regarded as the world experts in marine wildlife preservation and rescue. Kids, big and small, will love watching the animals and getting splashed. Visitors are likely to learn something about conservation that they can incorporate into their everyday lives.

The San Diego Zoo is famed worldwide, and its sister, the Wild Animal Park, is just as remarkable. The zoo, home to four thousand animals, is located in Balboa Park near downtown San Diego. Escondido’s 1,800 acre Wild Animal Park is home to an additional 3,500 animals. Both parks offer a variety of educational programs and summer camps for kids in addition to the beautiful exhibits available for tourists to see.

Balboa Park features fifteen museums, with specialties such as trains, science, art, history, air & space and sports. There’s something for everyone here. If San Diego is your home, you can take advantage of free Tuesdays.

The Pacific Ocean is by far the best attraction of all. With its miles of coastline, there are a variety of water related activities to enjoy. Those who live further inland come for the ocean. Even those who live in Northern California or Oregon or Washington come for the unbeatable combination of water and sunshine.

You can’t, or at least you shouldn’t, miss just going to the beach when you come to San Diego. Playing in the surf, building sand castles, exploring tide pools and having a beach bonfire are inexpensive and fun. Everyone should have memories of these experiences. If you’re a little more adventurous about the water, try sailing, body boarding, kayaking, surfing or fishing. At certain time of the year, you can go whale watching. Even during the off season, there are wildlife cruises where you can see local sea life, including dolphins.

Of course the ocean lends itself to more upscale endeavors. Take a sunset cruise or eat at a restaurant overlooking a harbor or beach. San Diego is also a popular departure point for cruises to Mexico.

This vacation paradise is conveniently located. Since it’s part of the continental U.S., it can be reached by car from much of the country. You can save money by avoiding airfare, especially if you’re traveling with a large group or family. People frequently drive to San Diego from much of the western United States. Those whose homes are even closer, like Los Angeles, Riverside or Orange County often visit for a weekend or even just a day.

If you’re looking for a place to spend an entire week or just a couple of days, San Diego is ideal. More than one family has loved San Diego so much that they decided to move there and buy a home. After all, if you live in San Diego you can take advantage of all these activities whenever you want.
