Wicked is becoming more and more popular with its stint on Broadway. This production is based off of a book written by Gregory McGuire. It is the tale of two very close friends — Glynda and Elphaba — and what separated them and brought them to the roles they played in the Wizard of Oz. Wicked’s lyrics are done and created by Stephen Schwartz; a man who put life into every word. The very soul of the story is not lost — at all — throughout the production; in fact, the combination of actors and lyrics brings the story to life even more.
Glynda and Elphaba were good friends, as children. The story of Wicked tells of this friendship and the eventual straying of each woman to the light and the dark. Glynda, by nature, is drawn to helping the world, whereas it is nearly innate in Elphaba to sway to the evil side of living. The production of Wicked will give you the chance to get to know each of these women — intimately — and comprehend their decisions and final outcomes in the Wizard of Oz
Glynda and Elphaba experience they typical ups and downs that any relationship experiences; in this they are no different from you and your best friend. As they deal with day-to-day issues like politics and moral beliefs, you begin to see where the two are very different — internally. By the time the Wizard of Oz was written, the girls had already grown, made their choices, and strayed from each other. This tale — Wicked — will help you to understand many of their actions in the Wizard of Oz. Having the opportunity to experience this production, firsthand, will open the door to a whole new understanding of the entire story.
The story itself is very inviting; but the song, music, and dance, put with the production, brings the entire story to life. It is not possible to sit in theatre and not be completely enthralled by the soul of the tale. The cast and performers do an astonishing job bringing to story off of paper and into real life. Wicked has broken so many records, and touched the hearts of so many, that the production is touring once again, giving those who have not seen it their first chance, and others a chance to see what they might have missed.
For six years, now, the cast of Wicked has been entertaining audiences across the world. This particular Broadway production has made record sales as the story, and the way it has been put together, is astonishing. You will never understand an old tale as you will this on after watching it live, on stage. Seattle Washington and Wichita, Kansas are only two of many stops scheduled for Wicked; smaller locations will even host the production with limited showings.
